  4. As most people play this convention, a 2D opening shows 11-15 HCP,
  5. with five hearts and four spades. A 2NT response is conventional,
  6. asking opener to clarify her hand. Opener then shows a three-card
  7. minor, etc., etc. A 2H or 2S response to 2D is a sign-off, of
  8. course. A 3C response is a sign-off for some, invitational for
  9. others. A 3D response is at least invitational, since a weak hand
  10. with long diamonds and short majors could just pass the 2D opening.

  15. -- A double of 2D is a two-way call, showing either a strong hand
  16. with both majors or a weak hand with both minors. You could have
  17. either S-AJ96 H-AQ1084 D-63 C-98 or S-3 H-84 D-QJ1098 C-KQ1097.
  18. Minors should be at least this good because third hand could well
  19. have both minors also. Partner should be able to tell which hand
  20. you have by looking at his own hand (and listening to the op-
  21. ponents).

  27. - A 3C or 3D overcall is a preemptive sort of bid, weak hand.

  29. -- A 2H or 2S overcall is artificial, showing a good hand with a
  30. good minor suit. A 2S bid shows diamonds, and a 2H bid shows clubs.
  31. Overcall 2D with 2S holding a hand such as S-A4 H-63 D-AK10873

  34. Partner must bid the minor suit indicated by the overcall when he
  35. has a bad hand. Any other action is forward-going, although not
  36. always forcing:

  44. The 3H or 3S bid shows that the suit named is stopped, and suggests
  45. that partner bid notrump if he has the other major suit stopped.

  47. -- A 2NT overcall is unusual notrump, also showing a pretty good
  48. hand. With a weak minor two-suiter, you would double. Overcall 2D
  49. with 2NT holding S-4 H-82 D-AK874 C-AQJ42. With a real notrump
  50. hand, say 17-18 HCP, pass and hope to bid 2NT on the next round.

  52. -- A 3NT overcall is natural, showing major suit stoppers and a
  53. long solid minor. The spade stopper may be sketchy or non-existent,
  54. since opener is known to have only four spades:  S-J32 H-K4 D-A4
  55. C-AKQJ872

  57. -- A 3H overcall is a standard strong cue bid, since 2H is not
  58. available for that purpose. Refer to DIRECT CUE BID OVERCALLS in
  59. the book "Cue Bids."

  61. -- A 3S overcall is natural, invitational: S-AK109732 H-4 D-KJ4
  62. C-A2

  64. With strength and length in just one major (unless the suit is
  65. spades and you are good enough to bid 3S or 4S), just pass over a
  66. 2D opening and see what happens. Pass with S-3 H-AJ97 D-AQ63
  67. C-K1043 or with S-AQ97 H-10 D-AJ83 C-K842. You will probably take
  68. action on the next round unless responder shows real strength (and
  69. perhaps even then). If a sharp-looking responder jumps to game in
  70. the short major, you will have to double for takeout--his bid could
  71. be a weak preemptive call. Knowing that you are sitting over the
  72. other major, partner may be able to pass the double (and lead a
  73. trump).

  75. After passing 2D, a reopening double of a 2H or 2S response is a
  76. two-way call, showing a good hand that has either a very strong or
  77. very short holding in the suit doubled, with support for both
  78. minors. "Very short" means a void or singleton.

  86. The 2NT reopening bid shows about 17-18 HCP, a hand such as S-K42
  87. H-K4 D-AK873 C-A107. West could not bid 2NT on the first round with
  88. this hand, because that would be unusual notrump, showing both
  89. minors. The 3C/3D reopening bids show hands too good for an
  90. original (preemptive) 3C/3D bid, not good enough for the (arti-
  91. ficial) 2H/2S overcall of 2D.

  93. When the response to 2D is 2H or 2S, the next hand should be quick
  94. to act. These responses are sign-offs that will be passed by
  95. opener, so this is really a balancing situation. Taking action may
  96. relieve pressure on partner when he has a good hand that is not
  97. suited to any reopening call.

  105. sign-off bid:

  110. If the 3C bid is invitational, the double shows a two-suited hand
  111. in diamonds and spades, at least 5-5.

  113. A double of a 2D opening that has been passed around is also for
  114. business. As with the double of 3C, it takes little more than good
  115. trumps since partner is marked with a lot of high cards:
